Atchison District Court Small Claims
Atchison County District Court materials describe small claims as an informal procedure for settling small legal disagreements and collections without an attorney. The local page says the claim must be less than $10,000. It also states that parties must be 18 or have claims filed against them, a person cannot file more than 20 claims in one year, the person filing must complete a petition, the defendant must be served an official summons, and the filer must provide the defendant's address.
Small claims records are still court records. A public search may show case number, parties, filing date, docket events, hearings, disposition, judgment, and payments where public. For copies, the same District Court fee structure applies unless the clerk quotes a different official cost for a specific request. If a small claim leads to judgment collection, later docket entries may involve garnishment, satisfaction, or post-judgment motions.
Atchison District Court Access Limits
District Court records are public only to the extent Kansas law and court rules allow. K.S.A. 45-216 states the public policy that records are open unless another law provides otherwise. K.S.A. 45-221 lists exemptions, and other Kansas statutes restrict juvenile intake records, juvenile offender information, sealed or expunged records, adoption records, mental health or care and treatment files, personal identifiers, and protected domestic information.
K.S.A. 45-230 also matters when records include names and addresses. It restricts using names and addresses derived from public records for certain commercial solicitation purposes. Historic Atchison District Court
The District Court works from a courthouse with strong local history. National Register material described in the research file identifies the Atchison County Courthouse as a Romanesque courthouse associated with architect George P. Washburn. The historical file says the courthouse had served as the center of county government for more than 75 years at the time of nomination, and it records that the tower clock was installed December 7, 1897, by E. Howard Watch and Clock Co. of Boston.

The building history fits the record history. Atchison District Court lists marriage and probate records back to 1855 and naturalization records from 1858 to 1953, so the courthouse is both a working court and a source for early county records.

Atchison District Court Appeals
